Amazon Prime Day (usually twice a year – July and October) is a tempting time to score deals on everything from gadgets to health products. However, as an OBGYN, I have a few strong opinions on what you should skip. Here are five items I’d advise against buying during Amazon Prime Day sale.
#1 Feminine Washes
Feminine washes are often marketed as essential for maintaining vaginal health. Do not be fooled. They’re largely unnecessary and can sometimes even cause irritation. Your vagina is self-cleaning. It doesn’t require special washes, especially ones with ingredients like boric acid or floral fragrances. All you really need is water or a mild, unscented cleanser. Save your money and stick to the basics.
#2 Trojan Pleasure Pack
The Trojan Pleasure Pack, or any similar product, doesn’t offer significant benefits for people with vaginas. There’s no evidence that these products enhance sexual pleasure in a meaningful way. Focus instead on communication and mutual pleasure with your partner.
#3 Expensive Prenatal Vitamins
Prenatal vitamins are important, but you don’t need to spend $30-$50 a month on them. Many high-quality prenatal vitamins are available at more affordable prices. Especially when bought in bulk from places like Costco. You could also talk to your healthcare provider about getting them for free or at a reduced cost. Remember, more expensive doesn’t always mean better.
#4 At-Home Fertility or Hormone Test Kits
At-home fertility or hormone test kits might seem like a convenient option, but they can be overpriced. Hormone testing is complex and often requires interpretation by a healthcare professional. If you have concerns about fertility or hormone levels, it’s best to consult your doctor who can provide targeted tests and accurate results.
#5 Any “Yoni” Products
Products claiming to “tighten” the vagina or enhance its appearance are not only unnecessary but can also be harmful. Your vagina is designed to adapt and does not need products to make it “tighter” or to enhance its appearance. These claims are often unfounded and can lead to more harm than good.
Now, if you’re looking to invest in products that can genuinely enhance your well-being, here are six recommendations I stand by during the Amazon Prime Day sales:
#1 Cordless Belted Heating Pad
For those dealing with menstrual pain, a cordless belted heating pad can be a lifesaver. It offers comfort and relief without the hassle of cords, making it easier to use throughout your day. The best: Cordless, Belted Heating Pad.
#2 Intimate Rose Pelvic Wand
Pelvic floor therapy can benefit greatly from tools like the Intimate Rose Pelvic Wand. If you’re already using pelvic floor therapy, you might find this tool useful. Prime Day often features great deals on such items, making it a good time to purchase. Find it here: Intimate Rose Pelvic Wand.
#3 Gynecology Books
Expand your knowledge with two essential books: The Menopause Manifesto and Come As You Are. Both offer valuable insights into women’s health and sexuality and are often available at discounted prices during Prime Day. Find them: The Menopause Manifesto and here: Come As You Are.
#4 Period Underwear
Period underwear, such as those from the brand “Knix,” provides comfort and reliability during your period. They are a practical and eco-friendly alternative to traditional menstrual products. Buy here: Knix Period Underwear.
#5 Trojan Bare Skin Condoms or Kimono Micro Thin Condoms
While I recommend skipping the Trojan Pleasure Pack, the Trojan Bare Skin condoms are a different story. They offer a thin, comfortable fit that many find preferable. Another excellent option is Kimono Micro Thin condoms. They offer high-quality protection and are often available in cost-effective bulk packs. Buy them here: Trojan Bare Skin Condoms, Kimono Micro Thin Condoms.
#6 A Gallon of Lube
This might sound extravagant, but if you find yourself needing a lot of lube, a gallon of Wet brand lube can be a practical choice. It’s a high-quality product that can be surprisingly cost-effective when purchased in bulk. Buy it here: Gallon of Lube.
With these recommendations, you can make more informed choices and enjoy Amazon Prime Day with products that truly benefit your health and well-being.
