You might have stumbled upon some of my informative content on TikTok (I hope you have!). For those of you who are new, I teach sex and health education, primarily focusing on vulvar and vaginal health. A while back, I asked my TikTok community about common vaginal health myths and misconceptions they’ve encountered. I received a flood of responses. No doubt – vaginal health is a topic that often remains shrouded in myths and misconceptions! Thanks to social media platforms, these myths can spread like wildfire. So, let’s dive into the world of sexual health with a game I like to call “Fact or Fiction.” Let’s debunk these vaginal health myths (or reveal them as truths!) below.

Pineapple Makes You Taste Better

Many of us have heard rumors that eating pineapple will improve your “taste.” But the truth is, there’s no scientific evidence to support this claim. Consuming pineapple won’t alter your taste in bed. Instead, focus on maintaining an overall healthy diet. Including plenty of fruits and vegetables is important. Also, be sure to stay well-hydrated for better vaginal health.

Chlorophyll Enhances Vulva Health

Another trend suggests that chlorophyll can improve vulva health and taste. Yet again, there’s no evidence to back this up. Another vaginal health myth. Yes, chlorophyll may have some benefits for body odor, but it’s not a solution for your intimate health. Moreover, excessive chlorophyll consumption can lead to digestive issues. Focusing on a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables is better for optimal health.

Cranberry Juice Cures UTIs

The idea that cranberry juice can cure a urinary tract infection (UTI) has been around for a while. While it’s not a cure, this myth has some truth. Cranberry supplements, rather than just juice, may help prevent recurrent UTIs. This is especially true for those who experience them frequently (four or more times a year). Yet, for a first-time UTI, cranberry is unlikely to be effective. It’s always best to consult your healthcare provider.

Your Period Stops in Water

You may have heard the claim that your period stops when you’re in the water, like a pool or the ocean. This is fiction. Your period doesn’t stop when you’re in the water. What happens is that water pressure can slow down or prevent vaginal bleeding. It doesn’t stop your period. Heavier flows or clots may not be affected by water pressure.

Drinking Water or Vitamin C Can Stop Your Period

There’s a belief that drinking excessive water or taking large doses of vitamin C can halt your period. This is fiction. No amount of water or vitamin C will stop your period. Focusing on safe and proven methods for managing your menstrual cycle.

Organic Tampons Make Periods Lighter and Less Painful

Many believe that using organic tampons can make periods lighter and less painful. This is fiction. Organic tampons may benefit those with sensitivities, but they won’t change your menstrual flow or reduce pain. Comfort is the priority. Choose products that suit your needs and preferences.

Boric Acid Balances pH

Boric acid is sometimes used to remedy vaginal issues like yeast infections. While it doesn’t balance pH, it can help with these conditions by acting as an antiseptic and astringent. Remember, it should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider. Using it without a proper diagnosis can be harmful.

COVID Vaccines Cause Infertility

No scientific evidence supports the claim that COVID vaccines cause infertility. In fact, thousands of pregnant individuals have gotten the vaccine. There has been no increase in miscarriage rates. Some individuals may experience temporary changes in their menstrual cycles after the vaccination. These effects are not linked to infertility.

Birth Control Pills Cure PCOS

Birth control pills cannot cure polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). They can help manage the symptoms associated with PCOS – symptoms such as irregular periods and hormonal imbalances. PCOS management often requires a multifaceted approach. This includes lifestyle changes, diet, and individualized medical treatments.

The Importance of Separating Fact From Fiction

In vaginal health, distinguishing between fact and fiction is crucial. To make informed choices, consult your healthcare provider. Dispelling myths and prioritizing accurate information will benefit you now and in the future.
