As an OB/GYN, I am often asked about the best methods to keep the vagina clean and healthy, including which feminine wash to pick. It’s one of the most common questions I get! While feminine washes may seem like a good idea to many, they can actually cause more harm than good. In this post, I explain why feminine washes are not necessary for vaginal health. I will also provide tips on how to maintain vaginal hygiene. Let’s dive in.

The vagina cleans itself

First off, it is important to understand that the vagina is a self-cleaning organ. The vagina has natural ways of protecting itself from bacteria. It does not need any external help in that regard. Using feminine washes can disrupt the natural balance of the vagina. This can lead to infections. Using cleaning products can cause irritation and dryness. This makes the vagina more likely to get infections. Stick to water, don’t get fancy with it!

My favorite feminine wash is water

Yes, that’s right. My favorite “feminine wash” is plain old warm water with a washcloth. Plain water is the best and safest way to clean the vagina. You don’t need any fancy products or chemicals to keep your vagina clean and healthy. Just use lukewarm water to wash the external parts of your vagina, and you’re good to go. Totally serious, no joke. Your vagina DOES NOT NEED any fancy soaps, scents, or, heaven forbid, douches!! Scented products are irritants only. Especially to the vulva, and do nothing more to help clean. All you need is a washcloth to clean the crevices of the labia, but that is it.

Many feminine washes contain fragrances and other chemicals. This can be harmful to the vagina. These products can irritate the skin of the vagina, causing burning and inflammation. In some cases, they can even lead to allergic reactions. The reactions can be severe and may need medical attention.

This includes bubble baths and bath bombs! Unless you’re asking for a visit to your gynecologist for a yeast infection. Again, stay away from ALL douches. The vagina is like a self-cleaning oven. The natural lubrication and normal discharge are meant to help keep it clean and tidy!

Your vagina’s pH balance is just fine

Another common misconception about feminine washes is that they are needed to maintain the pH balance of the vagina. Again, this is not true. The vagina has a natural pH balance of around 3.8 to 4.5, which is slightly acidic. This acidity helps to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. However, using feminine washes can disrupt this natural pH balance and make the vagina more alkaline. This, in turn, can lead to an overgrowth of bacteria and increase the risk of infections.

How to keep your vagina healthy

Besides using water, there are a few other things you can do to maintain vaginal hygiene. These include wearing breathable cotton underwear and avoiding tight-fitting clothing. Also, be sure to wipe from front to back after using the bathroom. Always use protection during sexual intercourse to prevent the spread of infections.
