What can I expect at my well woman appointment?

An annual well woman exam consists of taking your health history and vital signs. I will then do a physical exam including a breast and pelvic exam. If indicated, we will discuss doing a pap smear, STI (sexually transmitted infection) screening, and if we need to order a mammogram or bone mineral density.

What is a pap smear?

A pap smear is a screening test for precancerous or cancerous changes of the cervix. If you are due for a pap smear, it will be done during your pelvic exam at your well woman appointment after discussion with your doctor. It is important to realized that a pap smear is not done with every pelvic exam as it may not be indicated. During a pap, a brushing of the cells on the cervix is taken and sent to the pathologist who examines the cells for abnormal changes. If you pap is abnormal, we will call you to discuss next steps.

How often do I need a pap smear?

You should start pap smear screening at age 21 regardless of if you are sexually active or not. If your pap smear is normal, we will repeat screening every three years. If it is abnormal, we will discuss what interventions are necessary.
